The body weight of most adults remains relatively stable over a long period. This module gives an overview of body weight regulation and outlines compensatory physiological changes which accompany weight loss, many of which appear to encourage weight regain.

This module discusses the causes of obesity and the many factors that can influence body weight. It discusses the powerful evidence that obesity has a genetic basis and mentions the relative importance of other causes of weight gain.

This module takes an organ-based approach to reviewing the comorbidities associated with obesity. Most of these conditions can be identified by taking a careful history and performing a comprehensive physical examination. However, several complications that require further laboratory and diagnostic evaluation are reviewed in more detail.

In this video module, Dr Arya Sharma and one of his colleagues explore how to help you lead your patients with obesity to a healthy outcome, and how to raise the issue of obesity. Using a clinical scenario they demonstrate how not to approach the issue when a patient with obesity presents with an intercurrent health problem. They then go on to show how the issue should be sensitively raised.

This module covers four new medications approved and marketed in the US and two new medications approved in the EU. Those who take the course will be taught not only the efficacy, safety and tolerability profiles of all five medications but they will also gain knowledge in general principle of prescribing medications as adjuncts to lifestyle intervention to achieve and sustain weight loss.

Adolescents and children with obesity present more frequently to clinical services than their healthy weight age peers. This module covers child obesity assessment, the risks and complications of obesity in children, the evidence for lifestyle interventions such as diet and physical activity and their effective elements, parental involvement, pharmacotherapy, and severe obesity.
